Often called the “Wreck Capital of Florida,” diving in Fort Lauderdale offers easy access to vibrant coral reefs, artificial reefs, and a large collection of shipwrecks just offshore. The area’s reef system runs parallel to the coastline, making many dive sites accessible by short boat rides or even from shore. Divers can encounter turtles, reef sharks, goliath groupers, rays, and colorful tropical fish. With warm water and excellent visibility, Fort Lauderdale scuba diving is ideal for beginners, advanced divers, and wreck enthusiasts.

Fort Lauderdale has transformed its waters into a diver’s paradise through one of the most ambitious artificial reef programs ever undertaken, featuring over 80 intentionally sunk vessels that now teem with marine life. The artificial reefs have matured over decades, creating complex ecosystems that rival natural reefs for biodiversity and visual impact.

Perhaps one of the most famous wrecks in Fort Lauderdale’s waters is the SS Copenhagen. This Steel-hulled schooner sank in 1900 when she ran into a reef off of Pompano Beach. The Copenhagen was over 300ft long and remained on the reef for some time being used for target practice by US Navy pilots during WW II. Her remains are broken up in depths between about 16ft to 30ft, making her a good site for diving.
